On June 15, 2011 I visited Fenway Park.  The contrast to previous visits was odd.  I was there on a tour of the Park. No players, no crowds, no noise, no trash strewn around, no one selling Fenway Franks or even popcorn and crackerjacks.  Fenway Park looked like a photograph and was dreamlike on a gorgeous clear June day. It was unlike the Fenway Park I had visited for decades to see the Red Sox play.  As a Bostonian, I grew up when the Red Sox would draw us in, make us think we could win a World Series, but the Curse of the Bambino from Bab...read more

A new study by Cornell says that Natural Gas is a greater contributor to global warming than Coal.  For years, we have been hearing from natural gas organizations and politicians that natural gas is a cleaner burning alternative to coal.  And this is causing many electric utilities to begin switching their power plants from coal burning power plants to that of natural gas.  But this study says that is a bad idea! The study, by Robert W. Howarth, takes a much closer look at Methane emissions associated with natural gas production.  Specificall...read more

Having recently begun to blog more often, and hoping to publicize my blog in a cost effective way, I tend to publish a lot of my work on Digg.com and Reddit.com.  I’m biased towards Digg because I’ve had a lot more success there, and have generally enjoyed using the site quite a bit more.  But Reddit does offer some opportunities for bloggers, or those who simply enjoy searching the web for interesting stories.  So what really separates the two? Viewership Doing a web search on Digg and Reddit page views and traffic will yield a lot of info...read more

Last Friday, after years of debate, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved adding .xxx as a top level domain name (TLD).  This means that later this year domain names with the .xxx web suffix are expected to begin surfacing on the World Wide Web. The addition of .xxx as a TLD was not easy.  It was opposed by many groups for a wide variety of reasons, some which you might not expect.  Publicly, many conservative groups apposed the .xxx web suffix not because of the risqué nature of the websites that would use ...read more

Caregiving for elders has become endemic as the boomers age.  Terms such as the sandwich generation come from the enormous boomer generation.  Boomers may well have both children and a parent or parents requiring attention.  Few, perhaps none, are prepared for helping a parent who, despite a combination of physical or cognitive frailties, are still the parent.  Old patterns of behavior do not disappear.  A “Daddy” who was in charge and the ultimate father figure remains so.  A contentious Mother-Daughter relationship remains.  The challenge is ...read more

I still don’t know why it took President Obama so long to release his official “long form” birth certificate among all of the public accusations, but I’m pretty sure I know why he did it last week.  The public release of Obama’s birth certificate just so happened to correspond to this weekends White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which opportunist Donald Trump was invited to, and in attendance for. President Obama held back no punches with Donald Trump in attendance, giving an entertaining and comedic performance. “Donald Trump is here tonight...read more

The chemical addiction of smoking is a terrible thing, and one that has gripped millions of people for the last few decades. Of the people I have known that have quit, too many of them relapse. It may not be a day or two, it may not even be a year or two, but the success rate of quitting is abysmal with both NRT and cold turkey. Statistically speaking, as a quitter, the odds are stacked heavily against you.  The good news is that there is a "quasi" cure. It involves replacing one addiction for another, but with the benefit of having exponenti...read more

Son of Bitch!  I started smoking again.  I used to be a pack a day smoker, at a minimum.  If I was out drinking, it could easily be two packs.  If I was pulling an all-nighter writing a paper in college, that could easily call for three packs of cigarettes, a whole bunch of coke (the kind that comes in a can), and a trip to Taco Bell.             Yep, I love my cigarettes.  They’re my favorite drug, and they relax me like nothing else on earth.  They’re also my favorite crutch when I feel like being just a bit antisocial at a bar and need a b...read more

We’ve heard a lot about the Smart Grid in recent years.  The promise of Smart Grids is to manage our electrical systems in ways that can save money, increase reliability, and reduce our CO2 emissions.  One of the greatest promises of the Smart Grid is that it will allow us to use more solar and wind power, therefore reducing air pollution and the potential for global climate change. However solar and wind power have one major drawback.  The sun isn’t necessarily shining, and the wind isn’t necessarily blowing every time you turn on your light...read more

Information is still limited, and most of what we know now is what the President has said in his address to the nation.  Osama Bin Laden has been killed in a firefight in Pakistan, and his body is in US custody.  He was not found in a cave or shack hiding out, but rather, it appears from many reports, in a mansion in Pakistan.  The president chose his words carefully, because he was not just speaking to Americans, but to the world and even to those who wish us harm.  But his historic announcement was nonetheless firm, decisive, and optimisti...read more
